Catharine Susan, a naughty little wooden peg doll or 'Dutch Doll', was Kathleen Ainslie's most popular creation, and the books of her escapades were published in London and New York between approximately 1900 and 1911.

The character was named after Ainslie's own mother's forenames: she herself had been a childrens' illustrator and probably inspired her daughter to take up her vocation.
